Topics in Epistemology: Knowledge, Understanding, and Cognitive Success – Fall 2026

Course Description

This course explores what it is to know something, to understand it, and to believe it rationally. One guiding question will be: what makes these forms of cognitive success valuable? We will examine competing accounts of these achievements and the means by which they are attained, as well as theories of justification, evidence, and intellectual virtue. Topics may include skepticism, the structure of knowledge, the role of testimony (especially in scientific contexts), and probabilistic models of rational belief.

Topics in Epistemology: Echo Chambers, Attention, and Authority – Spring 2026

Course Description

This course surveys a handful of major issues studied in contemporary epistemology. We will wrestle with such questions as: what does it mean to ‘love the truth’? How should I evaluate experts and epistemic authorities (especially when I lack expert knowledge)? What are echo chambers and do they pose a deep problem for how we acquire knowledge? How do expert knowledge and expert testimony feature in our legal system?
